China condemns strikes on Iran as illegitimate, warns against escalation

Chinese FM Wang Yi condemned recent Israeli and US strikes on Iran as violations of international legitimacy and urged restraint to prevent another regional crisis.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated on Friday that the recent military strikes against Iran lacked legal justification, stressing that such clashes between Israel and Iran must not be repeated.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Paris alongside French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, Wang made his remarks in response to questions about China’s stance on the Iranian nuclear issue and the Middle East situation, as reported by the Tehran Times.

He said the Iranian nuclear matter could have served as an exemplary case for resolving international disputes through diplomacy, but instead has reignited a new crisis in the Middle East.

Although the world had a chance to pursue peace, it ultimately failed to seize the opportunity, he lamented, calling for reflection on the missed lessons.

“War cannot solve the Iranian nuclear issue,” Wang emphasized. “The use of force only worsens conflicts and fuels hatred.”

He condemned the U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure as reckless and warned that targeting such sensitive sites creates a dangerous global precedent.

“If a nuclear catastrophe occurs, its consequences would be global,” he warned with concern.

Wang also criticized the belief that “peace comes only through strength,” saying that such thinking stems from power politics and undermines international norms.

He added, “If strength alone defines right and wrong, then where is the place for rules and justice? Peace built solely on power risks unleashing catastrophe.”

China, he reiterated, maintains a clear and consistent position on Iran’s nuclear program. He acknowledged Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s repeated public opposition to nuclear weapons, while reaffirming Iran’s right under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to peaceful nuclear energy.

Based on this, Wang said the parties involved should accelerate efforts to negotiate a new international framework, ensuring Iran’s nuclear activities remain under IAEA safeguards.

He also linked the broader regional crisis to the unresolved Palestinian issue, saying it is at the heart of Middle East instability.

Wang argued that the two-state solution remains the only viable path to long-term peace and called on the global community to take serious, effective steps toward this goal.

As permanent members of the UN Security Council, he said China and France must support just, diplomatic solutions and reject double standards. He affirmed Beijing's willingness to cooperate with Paris toward global peace.

Wang concluded by urging the UN and the Security Council to actively fulfill their obligations in maintaining international peace and stability.
